SEMANTIC SATIATION FOR POETIC EFFECT

چکیده
Abstract This article argues that the defamiliarization caused by extensive repetition, termed ‘semantic satiation’ in psychology, was used ancient poets for specific effects. Five categories of repetition are identified. First, words undergo auditory deformation through syllable and sound as commonly etymologies. Second, a tradition emphatic proper-name is identified, which final instance name given special emphasis; this spans Greek Latin poetry, ultimately goes back to Nireus entry Catalogue Ships. Third, wordplay, where repeated term not only emphasized but also incurs some change its meaning or shape. Fourth, incantatory divine names hymns cultic invocations amplifies sense presence behind beyond repetend. Fifth, half full lines different speakers Old Comedy serves undercut parody original words. Extensive literature never merely ornamental range semantic effects with distinct identifiable structures.

[An effect of semantic satiation in conceptual processing].
This study examined whether semantic satiation effects for a picture exemplar differ from a word exemplar. If massive repetition of the category name leads to an inhibition of conceptual processing, then semantic satiation effects would be found in both the word and picture exemplar conditions. However, if the repetition leads to an inhibition of lexical processing, then effects would be found ...
متن کاملElectrocortical N400 Effects of Semantic Satiation
Semantic satiation is characterised by the subjective and temporary loss of meaning after high repetition of a prime word. To study the nature of this effect, previous electroencephalography (EEG) research recorded the N400, an ERP component that is sensitive to violations of semantic context. The N400 is characterised by a relative negativity to words that are unrelated vs. related to the sema...
متن کاملTesting an associative account of semantic satiation.
How is the meaning of a word retrieved without interference from recently viewed words? The ROUSE theory of priming assumes a discounting process to reduce source confusion between subsequently presented words. As applied to semantic satiation, this theory predicted a loss of association between the lexical item and meaning. Four experiments tested this explanation in a speeded category-matchin...
متن کاملOn the locus of the semantic satiation effect: evidence from event-related brain potentials.
The present study sought to determine whether semantic satiation is merely a by-product of adaptation or satiation of upstream, nonsemantic perceptual processes or whether the effect can have a locus in semantic memory. This was done by measuring event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in a semantic word-detection task involving multiple presentations of primes and critical related and unrelated ...
متن کامل[The effect of target degradation on detection of semantic satiation in a lexical decision task].
In this study, it was examined whether or not visual quality of letter strings influenced the detection of semantic satiation in a lexical decision task. Previous studies concluded that lexical decision tasks cannot detect semantic satiation, because semantic information was not fully utilized in this task. Recently, however, it has been shown that semantic satiation is detected in this task as...
